Do it for the Vine!

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 NIV).

A few years ago, there was a song going around on social media titled “Do it for the vine!” This song was so popular that even Elmo got in on it. The platform “vine” was an American short-form video hosting service where users could share six-second-long looping video clips. It was originally launched on January 24, 2013, by Vine Labs, Inc., but was quickly bought out by Twitter before its launch in 2012. The service was shut down in 2017 and soon after, the app was discontinued as well. [i]

In John’s gospel, to do it for the vine means that the more a branch abides in the vine, the more it becomes like what it is attached, and the closer that the branch abides to the heart of the vine, the more nourishment it receives, thus it becomes able to bear fruit.

No branch bears fruit in isolation. Every fruitful branch has a vital connection with the vine. So, to abide in Christ is the necessary prerequisite of fruitfulness for the Christian. Fruitfulness doubtless includes both the production of Christian character and the winning of others to follow Christ; it includes everything that results from vital union with Christ.

Have you ever heard of a vineless branch?

Father God, thank You for the Vine that gives us strength and nourishment to bear fruit. We pray that the longer we are attached to Him, the more that we will become like Him. It’s in His name that we pray. Amen!

I pray that you all have a beautiful day.

One Love,
